After articles covering the Qingdao algae bloom appeared in the New York Times, International Herald Tribune and LA Times, the topic has taken off. Both NBC Nightly News and ABC World News with Charles Gibson aired pieces on July 2 evening shows, and NPR aired a July 3 Morning Edition interview with our sailors as well. - Nancy Rios Travels to Washington D.C. for July Fourth Celebration Airing on PBS
Women's Windsurfer Nancy Rios will be among about 15 Olympic athletes to be honored in the Washington, D.C. for the PBS "Capitol Fourth" celebration. The show will air from 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM on July 4 and will include performances by Talyor Hicks, Jerry Lee Lewis, Huey Lewis and the News, the National Symphony Orchestra, and more. - Olympic Tornado Sailor Charlie Ogletree Honored at Houston Astros Game
On June 27, Charlie Ogletree was invited to throw the first pitch as the Houston Astros played the Boson Red Sox. Charlie was joined by Tina Thompson of Women’s Basketball, and Marty Holden of Men’s Soccer. Charlie had just finished a three-week, light-air training camp in Spain and was thrilled by the homecoming welcome. July 4 marks a quick turnaround for Charlie and skipper Johnny Lovell, who are straight out to China for another training camp. As many sailors are, Charlie is trying to lose weight for the big Games and still stay physically robust. He says, "I’ve lost eight pounds since spring while Johnny is down ten pounds. We’re working hard on losing another five pounds each. A typical day for the two of us started with a one-hour run, followed by calisthenics, including push-ups, sit-ups, etc. After that it was sailing or refining our gear."
